By “Industrial Procedures”, I’m referring to procedures used by workers who operate equipment and processes in sectors such as oil & gas, chemical processing, mining, transportation, manufacturing, nuclear, utilities, agriculture, and food production.  The writing style and format for procedures in these environments differ significantly from those followed in, for example, software and pharmaceutical documentation.  It is worth noting that very few textbooks are available that deal exclusively, as my course does, with industrial procedures.  Industrial procedures occupy a special niche in the technical writing world.

My course covers the many factors involved in achieving the objective of a well-written procedure: namely, to present a sequence of actions which, if performed correctly, ensure that a given task is safely and effectively completed.

The course structure is outlined in the slide shown below.

Outline Slide in Industrial Procedure Writing Course

The current edition (Rev. 2.2) contains 287 PowerPoint slides. The Steps and Support Content chapters together make up approximately 40% of the course. To reflect their importance, these sections are highlighted in the Course Outline slide. Well-written steps and support content (e.g. Notes, Cautions, and Warnings) are essential to the safe and correct performance of industrial tasks.
